Lower School
The Lower School at Town is comprised of grades K-4 and nurtures students' natural intellectual curiosity and excitement about learning, as we help students develop core competencies for elementary school and beyond. In Lower School language arts, our boys become proficient readers, writers, and oral communicators. In grades K-3 they meet daily in language arts reading groups that use phonics-based materials and award-winning children's literature. Fourth graders begin the transition to upper school by meeting as a class for language arts. Spelling is integrated into the curriculum through a spiraling program that teaches spelling skills and strategies rather than word lists.
Mathematics is also a spiraling program integrating standard computation with innovative techniques using manipulatives and games, giving students both a better understanding of skills and the confidence that comes from using mathematical thinking to solve real-life problems. The Lower School program also includes social studies, with an emphasis on cultural diversity and multiple perspectives, as well as a hands-on science curriculum. Music, art, glee club and physical education complement the academic program in all grades. Drama and woodshop are third grade electives, while recorder, Lego engineering, and digital photography are added as electives in the fourth grade. At all grade levels, technology is integrated appropriately with classroom activities and content, and is used as a learning tool across the curriculum. Teachers employ the Responsive Classroom approach to build community throughout the Lower School.
